What to expect

JPEG cannot store transparent pixels, so transparent areas are deliberately filled with white.

Photographs often become smaller; sharp text or diagrams may look better if left as PNG.

Quality and file behaviour

  • A high-quality JPEG setting is the default, with a smaller option available.
  • JPEG has no alpha channel; transparent input areas are filled white.
  • The image is decoded and re-encoded with lossy JPEG compression.

Common problems

  • Animated PNG input is not supported because animation would be lost.

Frequently asked questions

What happens to transparent parts of my PNG?

They become white in the JPEG. The review step states this before the conversion begins.

Is PNG to JPEG a lossless conversion?

No. JPEG uses lossy compression, so fine pixel detail can change even at a high quality setting.
